|
Comprehensive guidelines on whitewater rafting in the Victoria Falls' Batoka Gorge. Includes details on all of the rafting options from the one day trips to multi-day expeditions plus descriptions of the individual rapids and the Zambezi Report for an update on current river conditions. Acclaimed as the wildest one-day whitewater run in the World, the Zambezi River is also recognized by rafting and kayaking enthusiasts as one of the top ten paddling rivers on the planet! If you don't immediately associate the terms "Stairway to Heaven" and "Oblivion" with adventure then you haven't experienced Zambezi Whitewater! The Batoka Rapids
White Water Rafting on the Zambezi River in Victoria Falls has been classified by the British Canoe Union as Grade 5 - "extremely difficult, long and violent rapids, steep gradients, big drops and pressure areas". This is a high volume, pool-drop river with little exposed rock either in the rapids or in the pools below the rapids. Pick up a rapid-by-rapid account through the Batoka Gorge.... The Batoka rapids below Victoria Falls were run in a raft for the first time in March 1981 Falcon was one of the first commercial rafting operations in the early 90's and has established itself as the leading whitewater outfit in Zambia: first in safety, gear, river guides and back-up. The company also pioneered river-boarding on the Zambezi and is recognized as the top kayaking outfit on the Zambian shoreline at Victoria Falls. The Zambezi Waterfront located 4km upstream of the falls is the official base from which we conduct our rafting, kayaking and riverboarding operations. Find out more about our whitewater rafting options - we offer half and full day trips plus multi-day expeditions and a range of adventure combinations. Falcon operates year round. River conditions are determined by seasonally predictable fluctuations in water levels. Low water season generally runs from August to January each year - this is when the Zambezi is at its very wildest. We're in high water from about February to July with a short "closed season" around April/May depending on the season's rains. The River Report is an update on current rafting conditions in Victoria Falls. |

|

Situated on the Masuwe Estate, only 10 minutes from the centre of Victoria Falls town you'll find a group of lion cubs ranging from 3 to 16 months of age. These lion cubs offer guests an unparalleled experience and insight into the behaviour of this threatened African species. The "walking with lions" encounter is an opportunity to interact with 2 or 3 cubs for up to an hour and a half during a single session. The lions are unrestrained and roam free as you join them on a walk through riverine vegetation and African bush on the banks of the Masuwe River. The encounter is fully supervised and professionally managed by an experienced and qualified team who have been working with lions for over 20 years originally at Gweru's Antelope Park. This activity is available in Zimbabwe only but arrangements can be easily made for guests staying in Livingstone on the Zambian side of Victoria Falls. |

River Boarding
|
The sport involves "surfing" the rapids on body boards accompanied by a qualified River Guide.
The first commercial river boarding operation was established in Queenstown, New Zealand by Jon Imhoof in 1989. Jon joined the team at Falcon Safaris Excellence to pioneer Zambezi Riverboarding in 1996. The sport involves "surfing" the rapids on body boards accompanied by a qualified River Guide. Basic riverboarding skills are taught in still water before progressing into moving water. Enthusiastic boarders can stop at "play spots" along the way to surf, ride whirlies and "squirt" (best described as flying underwater).
All you need is to be reasonably fit and be prepared to "Go for it!" A cameraman accompanies the trip taking video footage and photographs which are shown at the end of the day at the Zambezi Waterfront. Riverboarding is best arranged in conjunction with a one day rafting trip. It's also included as an option with the Zambezi Extreme Combos
The "Low Water" Trip - August to January
The "low water" trip starts in the Boiling Pot followed by a few hours playing the "Roller coaster" and "Flow Rider". "Morning Glory", rapid #4 is very technical and the rapid is run in a raft.
The next big thrill is rapid #5, "Stairway to Heaven" - not too technical but a very steep and massive drop reserved for the gutsy!
The trip continues through three more grade 2-3 rapids, before arriving at the lunch spot.
After lunch, the trip continues through "The Devils Toilet Bowl" a grade 3/4 rapid, followed by another grade 5, "Gulliver's Travels". This one is too technical for first time river surfers and again everyone rides in the raft. Next up you go "Star Trekking" through rapid 8, a grade 4-5. "Commercial Suicide" is next and is a grade 6 - everyone walks. Finally, we jump in for our last rapid of the day - # 10, "Gnashing Jaws of Death" - a good grade 3 wave train and a great way to finish off the day.
The "High Water" Trip - February to July
Depending on water levels, the "high water" trip usually begins at rapid #11, "Overland Truck Eater". This is a big barrel for about two weeks in the year during the transition between high and low water in mid January and early July. The trip continues in a raft down the continuous section of white water ending with "The Mother", rapid 13. Rapid 14 is a grade 3 and is a nice easy warm up for what's to come. Next up is the 700 metre continuous stretch of white water known as the grade 4/5 "Terminator" - the option to ride in the raft is always available.
After the "Terminator", we run " Double Trouble" a nice grade 3/4, and continue down the fast moving white water to "Oblivion". This is a grade 4 rapid with a great wave train which continues down river for 200 metres. The lunch spot is reached after a short raft paddle.
After lunch, you run two more grade 3 rapids before arriving at rapid #24, a great Zambezi stationary wave. You'll spend at least an hour while everyone gets a chance to surf. This wave is great for beginners and experts alike. After you've been deliberately exhausted the trips rafts for a few grade 2-3 rapids before arriving at the take out point.

Kayaking
|
|
Half and full day tandem trips through the Batoka Gorge in Topolino Duo Kayaks Another dimension to the white water experience on the Zambezi is where clients are taken down the rapids in Topolino Duo Kayaks.
Paddles, life jackets and helmets are issued at check-in. A comprehensive safety talk and practice session is done at the bottom of the gorge before commencing the day's activity.
An experienced white water kayaker who steers the boat through the rapids acts as River Guide. The kayaking trip is run in conjunction with the daily rafting trip for added safety. Should the kayak capsize in a rapid, the guide attempts an Eskimo roll, failing which the client and guide end up swimming the rest of the rapid! |

Abseiling
|
Batoka Gorge action above rapid#7 also includes the "Gorge Swing" and the "Flying Fox"
These relatively new activities are operated on a spectacular site above Rapid 7. A safety instructor briefs guests on the area and proper use of the equipment before starting. The abseil is 53 metres moving down the gorge wall backwards or clients can "rap jump" facing towards.
The gorge swing entails throwing yourself off the edge of the cliff attached to a body harness and free falling for 50 metres before being swung out into the middle of the gorge. The jump ends with several pendulum swings before clients are lowered to the ground. At the bottom there is a track back to the top of the gorge.
The flying fox is a cable slide high above the gorge and clients "fly" across, attached to a special body harness. They are then pulled back to the gorge so there is no walkout. All activities can be done as many times as you like throughout the day.

- Minimum 1, maximum 20 clients
- Tea, coffee and scones are served on arrival
- Soft drinks and iced water are available during the day. Full day trips include a light lunch of cold meats, cheese and salads
