Savute Safari Lodge

The Lodge accommodates 24 guests, in 12 thatched timber and glass suites. Each suite has a private deck, and a combined bedroom/ lounge area, with en suite facilities. The Lodge’s signature expansive glass sliding doors and viewing decks were inspired by the diverse panorama of the area – with the dry season’s almost harsh, and barren seeming landscape, contrasted to the rainy seasons clear days, overlooking the vivid shades of new grass. The now dry Savute channel is part of the dynamic Savute eco system renowned for its large concentration of elephant and lion. It is on the banks of the channel that you will find Savute Safari Lodge, one of only 2 Lodges in this area.

The main lodge area houses the lounge, library and cocktail bar in a beautiful Thatch and timber building. A large fireplace downstairs is equally inviting on winter nights, while the delicious aroma of dinner and the prospect of candlelit, dining beckons. There is a viewing deck which overlooks the channel, alongside an al fresco dining area, and the swimming pool. You enjoy game drives in the morning and afternoon, exploring the area, including the Savute Marsh, and there is also a chance to see the San Rock Art in the Gubatsa Hills.

Game viewing is generally excellent, with good populations of elephant, lion, zebra, giraffe, numerous antelope species, along with leopard, wild dog, hyena and cheetah. Birding is good all year round, but particularly so in the rainy season, with many annual visitors, including the magnificently coloured carmine bee-eater.

The rainy season (November to March), also brings an annual zebra migration, as they travel to the Makgadikgadi Pans from the Linyanti area.

Perched on the banks of the Savuti Channel within Chobe National Park, Savute Safari Lodge offers a good location from which to explore the nearby Savuti Marshes. Comfortable without being luxurious, the camp enjoys views over the Savute Channel and its two pumped waterholes, which – especially during the dry season – attract vast numbers of elephant to drink in the afternoons and evenings.

The main area of Savute Safari Lodge houses a lounge area, library and bar, all comfortable locations in which to relax during the day or discuss sightings in the evening over a few drinks and some nibbles. As one of the original safari camps in this region (it used to be called Lloyd’s Camp), Savute Safari Lodge is a little more dated than some modern camps. It is, for example, one of the few camps in northern Botswana where glass sliding doors are a prominent feature, and it certainly doesn’t have the ‘camp’ feel of many of Botswana’s other camps and lodges. Indeed, we think that the dining area in this main part of camp is fairly characterless.

Activities are organised around game drives throughout the Savute area in open 4×4 safari vehicles. Many trips will incorporate a visit to the Savute Marsh to give you a chance to see the historic presence of the Savute Channel at the marsh against a backdrop of teeming wildlife. Guests can also enjoy a visit to the ancient San rock paintings at Gubatsa Hills – a small hilly outcrop which forms a prominent landmark in the otherwise flat landscape.
